Competition Timeline
Four stages designed to identify and celebrate the brightest young research minds from around the world.
Step 1
Registration
Deadline: February 25, 2026
Register by February 25th, 2026 to participate in the IRO. After registering, the IRO will create unique exam passwords for each student. Students will be sent their login information, once registration is closed. Students will then compete in the Opens round.
Step 2
Open
March 7, 2026
The "Opens" round is a comprehensive assessment, encompassing diverse elements such as analyzing research papers, interpreting scientific data, and tackling question formation and inquiry. This stage aims to test participants' analytical skills and critical thinking.
Step 3
Semifinals
April 4, 2026 • Top 10%
From the Open examinations, the top 10% of participants will advance to the semifinals. The semifinals elevate the challenge of introducing free response questions judged by qualified researchers delving deeper into participants' ability to articulate and apply their understanding of scientific concepts.
Step 4
Finals
June 19-21, 2026 • Top 15
The pinnacle of the competition is the finals, where the top 15 participants will engage in intense competition for the coveted gold, silver, and bronze medals in the IRO. Additional sponsor prizes, media opportunities, and recognition will be awarded.
