Each IRIS student works with a mentor from a top UK or US university. Live online sessions run three hours, twice a week, in the student’s own timezone. During the prep reading week, students also get office hours with a Harvard PhD Teaching Fellow.

Every IRIS student completes a publication-ready research paper in six weeks and presents it to peers in the final week. IRIS runs in summer and winter cohorts, and each course is limited to 13 spots, so registering early matters. IRIS students also earn two transferable college credits from UCSB Extension School and a certificate at the end of the program.

2. Stanford Pre-Collegiate Summer Institutes: Number Theory

Course Eligibility: High school students in grades 9-11

Application Deadline: March 13 for the 2026 program; 2027 dates have not been announced

Course Duration: Two weeks in June or July

If you have a soft spot for mathematics and wish to venture into the abstract side of this subject, consider taking up the Number Theory course at Stanford.

Number Theory is open to students in grades 9-11 at the time of application. The Stanford Pre-Collegiate Summer Institutes deadline falls in March, and it was March 13 for the 2026 program.

Number Theory runs for two weeks in June or July, with live online classes Monday through Friday, and tuition is $3,200 for the 2026 program. Students attend two hours of live class each day, join a third hour of online office hours, and spend 2-3 hours a day on homework. Stanford does not grade the course or award college credit for it.

The course focuses on number theory. You'll study the properties and relationships of whole numbers, including their prime factors. The course has been structured to take you through difficult theories one step at a time.

The Stanford course description sets one overarching goal: students observe, investigate, hypothesize, and prove the patterns they see in the integers. By the end of the course, students gain experience writing proofs, presenting solutions to mathematical problems, and communicating clearly with peers. The course requires completed mathematics courses through pre-calculus.

3. Wharton Global Youth Online Program
